In Defence of the Mainstream

In Defence of the Mainstream is a study thath seeks to describe the “transitional decade” of the 1990s in Russia, a decade which largely determined the future course of life and culture in the country. The book's concept can be described as a kind of cultural archeology: approaching on the paradigm of cultural transformations from a historacal distance, the authors strive for a broader perspective, in order to understand how particular visions, cliches, and trends were formed and what influence they continue to have on us today. Ultimately, the questions which lie at the center of this book are whether culture has the capacity to change the world and to determine the collective percpection of a particular period of time.
