  • About the Book

Nikolai Mikhailovich Suetin is an artist both known and unknown. Malevich's pupil, "incorrigible Suprematist", respectable chief artist of the State Porcelain Factory, chief artist of the super-ideological Soviet pavilions at the World Exhibitions in Paris in 1937 and in New York in 1939. In 1948, Suetin was lucky - he was struck off the lists for the "Leningrad case". The space of action - Vitebsk, Petrograd-Leningrad, sometimes Moscow. He traveled to France and America. He was rarely mentioned in critical and art history literature. Tried to be in the shadows. He worked. He always considered Suprematism his main direction and did not strive to show it, clearly realizing not only its "unnecessariness" but also its "harmfulness". A life full of mysteries and contradictions. The creative biography of an artist active in time and existing as if outside of time. Meanwhile, the scale of Nikolai Suetin's work allows us to talk about him as one of the remarkable phenomena of the era, the true history of artistic culture of which is now increasingly open to us.
