Vilém Flusser

Vilém Flusser

1920–1991

Vilém Flusser was a Czech-born philosopher, writer and journalist. He held Brazilian citizenship and wrote most of his work in German and Brazilian Portuguese. His early work was marked by discussion of the thought of Martin Heidegger, and by the influence of existentialism and phenomenology. In the later phase of his work, he turned his attention to the philosophy of communication and of artistic production. Flusser's work elaborates a theory of communication, theorising the epochal shift from what he termed "linear thinking" (based on writing) toward a new form of multidimensional, visual thinking embodied by digital culture. For him, these new modes and technologies of communication make possible a society (the "telematic" society) in which dialogue between people becomes the supreme value.
